The times they are a changin...

So 6 years ago, following very unhappy present less birthday I was presented a shiny new car as a birthday/signing day present. For one of the few times in my life I can say my current situation all stems from that day, and is entirely my fault.

Back during my senior year I laxidasically decided I should probably get my license; being that I was leaving for college 30 hours away and all. I was a late bloomer, I really didn't feel the need for it prior, cause I had a personal chauffeur (aka daddy). After finally getting my license, like most teenagers my parents agreed to buy me a car. We searched high and low, but and small, finally setting on an adorable little dodge caliber. We were torn between the pretty and beefy F150 or the sensible and economical caliber, eventually sensibility won out and we purchased Pete (in honor of my college mascot Pistol Pete).

However today I am at a crossroads, with a horse in the way and a 3 month long pageant season ahead, the beefy truck 6 years ago is looking much more appealing. So I've decided to bite the bullet and consider (though I'm not 100% set in stone) selling Pete.

Of course just like back then Daddy and I are somewhat at odds, I want a pretty Lariat or King Ranch with chrome, he thinks I need the affordable model with a efficient 4.6 engine; luckily this time it's my call since I'm paying! I found one that someone meets us in the middle, but is a little over my ideal budget. Once again patience is kicking my butt, as Dad thinks I need to wait until April, but I'd rather just get it over with now! I'm calling in it tonight, so we shall see... Until then I am still searching, for all sorts of stuff, speaking of which, has anyone seen my sanity?

  1. Car shopping is both super fun and super stressful :)

  2. Good luck! We've been there with the sensibility vs fun vs what you really want. Sounds like a middle of the road truck might be a good idea for now, there is always time to upgrade to a King Ranch (drool) at some point when finances are better. ;)

    1. I think that I will end up with whatever daddy picks! lol honestly I'll be happy with whatever, the King Ranches are just really hard to find, there aren't many out there...

  3. I'm in the "always get the bigger truck" boat, but I'm not the one writing a check. ;)

    1. haha it's mostly gas mileage/living in the SF area that limits that... Otherwise I'd just get a dually flat bed diesel and be done with this for the next 10 years!

  5. I personally would want a bigger truck than that. If I'm getting a goose neck I would want an f250 diesel. If I was to go the bumper pull route if prefer a large SUV like a Tahoe with the appropriate away bars and tow package etc. Bc ultimately I wouldn't feel comfortable pulling a larger trailer with just a 150. There are tons of threads out there on various sites that could probably help some with your decision :) gas mileage wise I guess the 150 makes more sense just woudknt be beefy enough for me if I was going to be driving a truck all the time.

Also don't know if you saw my question on your last post but I would love to know how you managed to renew your domain :)

    1. well we have two one ton pickups on the ranch, my primary trailer is a 2 horse in line bumper pull from the 60s (aka very small). We also have pulled the bumper pull trailers we own with our expedition, but aesthetically I prefer trucks! lol honestly gas mileage between the two is the same

    2. Guess they make tons of research on stuff like this for a reason. I just saw an awesome little gooseneck being pulled by a 150 and it seemed to do great. I am currently trying to reevaluate my car situation and really want to find something I can haul with but can't figure out what to get. A lady at the barn has a smaller 2500 Chevy (gas) and it is really lethargic hauling. But considering that I won't be making long hauls and might haul 1-2x a month I have a lot to think about!

Sorry for the delayed reply - thinking about this again after an absurd tire bill on my car after a flat… Audi out truck/suv in.

  6. Never EVER pull a trailer with an SUV...it is NOT safe and they are not designed for it. An F150 is fine pulling a bumper pull, even a large size one.

    1. I have been hauling since before I had my license, in addition my dad is a fleet manager for a major city fire department. Believe it or not they are the same frame different body. It is safe as long as you pay attention to max payload and use safe driving practices.
